Tohoku hikes (東北)
Due to the ongoing nuclear problems, please avoid climbing Mt. Bandai, Mt. Azuma, and Mt. Adatara, as they lie dangerously close to Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
Northeastern Japan, more commonly referred to as the Tohoku region, is an area teeming with volcanic calderas, hidden hot springs, and pristine virgin forests. It’s also home to some of the best non-technical, multi-day hikes in this country (Mt. Iide, Mt. Asahi) as well as perhaps the best “if you only have time to climb one mountain in Japan” hike (Mt. Chokai).
