Thanks for tip Wes! In pouring rain we had no views at all, but did check out the 岩屋不動 for you. There is small stone statue at the end, nothing that cannot be seen elsewhere along the trail. The 500 figures engraved to stone on the way back are awesome though and Tsubosaka temple has great location also.

Make sure to visit Takatori town tourist information center in the old town. It's on the main street. You can get a map of the hiking trail and watch the computer graphics of the castle as it was 200 years ago. :)

Sierra,

This hike is about a 90-minute train ride from Kyoto. It's a bit far. If you want to do some hiking in Kyoto, then you could head to Mt. Atago (take a bus to Kiyotaki and start from there), or you could do the Daimoji mountain hike which starts next to Ginkakuji temple.

Tourist information might have information on these two mountains. I've done them both many times but haven't had the chance to write them up on the site

Ive lived in Kansai for 5 years, more or less, and havent heard of nearly half of these places. Thanks for all of the great ideas. Do you do any kind of hiking group, btw?
